Frequently Asked Questions

How is Dru different from other types of yoga?
‘The Dru Course offers a complete package of personal development, structure for your practice at home, skills to teach and practical ways to give back to the world.’   - Judy, HR Director, Australia

There are many different types of yoga and the difference between them depends on what they focus on. Many people appreciate Dru because anyone can do it, regardless of age, body shape or ability.

Dru is a graceful and potent form of yoga, based on soft flowing movements, directed breathing and visualisation. It is deeply relaxing and rejuvenating, yet it can take you to any level of fitness you’d like, improving your strength, flexibility and building core stability.

Dru specialises in integrating your body, mind and spirit. Dru uses classical yoga and meditation techniques to help you positively transform how you think, how to keep your emotions uplifted as well as revitalise your body. You will always feel great when you do Dru!

    What makes this course unique?

Choosing the right school to train with is a big decision and will help shape your entire career as a yoga teacher. Since 1985 we have trained over 2,500 Dru Yoga teachers worldwide. Here in Australia we’ve trained 170 teachers, and another 220 are currently in training.  Half our students start to teach before graduation, helping to recoup their costs.

What if I don’t want to teach? What if I want to do the course for my own personal development?
About one third of our students do the course for their own personal growth, knowing that Dru’s deep insights into the body-mind system will make a huge contribution to their lives. These students find the ‘teacher-training’ aspects of the course very beneficial: the course material on the subtle energetics of rapport building, communication and classroom dynamics will help you in almost any personal, group or leadership setting. And the teaching practices we guide you through are fun, supportive and help you experience the benefits of the techniques more profoundly.

How is the course content arranged?
During the first half of the course we introduce you to the foundations of Dru Yoga - essential principles, postures, sequences, pranayama, meditation, anatomy and physiology. Some communication and teaching skills are also introduced during this time. In the second half we continue to refine and develop your understanding of Dru Yoga and how it works, and how to develop specific therapeutic programs for individuals according to their unique requirements. We also introduce new material and revisit aspects of posture work and sequences, taking your understanding and experience of these to a deeper level. It is an experiential course..

Where else can I train in Dru Yoga? Can I choose a different training format?
You can train across the world! And here in Australia you can train in Dru in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra.
These locations run courses in varying formats, ranging from weekends to 4-day modules.

      Homework and continuous assessment
Students may begin teaching small groups approximately half way through the course if they pass their interim assessment. There are three assignments given during the course as well as short quizzes after you have covered every four course books. Part of the assessment includes a structured journal of "portfolio sheets" on the practices, which give you an invaluable reference guide.

Will the course pay for itself? When can I start teaching?
You can begin teaching informally from half way through the course after an interim assessment. If you gather a group of 6 friends weekly, and then in the first 18 months after graduating teach about 12 people, you will have earned money well beyond the entire course costs. Pretty good really!

Do you allow payments for the course to be extended beyond the end of the course?
Yes, we always try to meet the needs of our students with a wide range of payment options, which give you choices on how often your pay and how long you pay for the course.

What does the course cost cover & are there any additional costs?
The course cost covers tuition, course notes and morning and afternoon refreshments. You will need to arrange your own lunches. It is usually possible for students to optionally purchase mp3 recordings of module sessions. Costs are usually around $15-$20 per session. At every module there is also a range of supportive books, yoga equipment, DVDs and CDs available for sale. Costs stated are subject to change due to any expense increase.

What is the selection process for the course?
The senior tutors make their selection of course participants based on the information provided in your application form and if necessary on further discussions with you or your referees.

What happens if I miss some course days?

We are an International School and our syllabus is standard throughout the world. If you miss day(s) you can catch up in two ways. You can do this locally in a one-to-one or group session (at tutor’s discretion – and there is an additional cost), or you can catch up by visiting another Dru Yoga course elsewhere (anywhere in the world!) when that part of the course is being taught. Anyone for a holiday overseas?

How much of a time commitment is the course?
The time commitment varies from person to person, although most students would practice daily or every second day for around 10 to 20 minutes. A few practise less than this, but many practise more, knowing how much this enhances their lives!
